Peru U20 1-1 Venezuela U20: highlights and Group A table analysis

Yohandry Orozco (Zulia) earned Venezuela a point with a fantastic goal in the second half to firmly establish himself as one of the standout players of the tournament so far. Osnar Noronha Montani (CNI) had given Peru the lead in the first half after some great work from the increasingly impressive Christian Cueva (Universidad San Martín).

With just one round of matches remaining in the first group stage, here is how Group A looks:

TeamPldWDLGFGAGDPts
 Argentina431084+410
 Uruguay311163+34
 Venezuela30303303
 Chile310237−43
 Peru301225−31
Analysis:

  • Argentina are through as group winners
  • Uruguay are likely to join them unless they lose by 4 goals or more
  • Chile face Venezuela with the winner progressing to the next round
  • Venezuela can go through with a draw if...
    • Peru don't win by exactly 3 goals. Or...
    • ...They score at least as many goals as Peru
  • Unfortunately for Peru they either need to beat Uruguay by 4 goals or more
    • Or a 3 goal margin of victory would be enough as long as Venezuela/Chile draw and Peru get 2 more goals than Venezuela!

It is unfortunate that Thursday night may be the last time we get to see Christian Cueva in this tournament as he has been particularly enjoyable to watch. Hopefully Venezuela will do enough to advance giving Yohandry Orozco further opportunity to shine.
