With just one round of matches remaining in the first group stage, here is how Group A looks:
Team | Pld | W | D | L | GF | GA | GD | Pts |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Argentina | 4 | 3 | 1 | 0 | 8 | 4 | +4 | 10 |
Uruguay | 3 | 1 | 1 | 1 | 6 | 3 | +3 | 4 |
Venezuela | 3 | 0 | 3 | 0 | 3 | 3 | 0 | 3 |
Chile | 3 | 1 | 0 | 2 | 3 | 7 | −4 | 3 |
Peru | 3 | 0 | 1 | 2 | 2 | 5 | −3 | 1 |
- Argentina are through as group winners
- Uruguay are likely to join them unless they lose by 4 goals or more
- Chile face Venezuela with the winner progressing to the next round
- Venezuela can go through with a draw if...
- Peru don't win by exactly 3 goals. Or...
- ...They score at least as many goals as Peru
- Unfortunately for Peru they either need to beat Uruguay by 4 goals or more
- Or a 3 goal margin of victory would be enough as long as Venezuela/Chile draw and Peru get 2 more goals than Venezuela!
It is unfortunate that Thursday night may be the last time we get to see Christian Cueva in this tournament as he has been particularly enjoyable to watch. Hopefully Venezuela will do enough to advance giving Yohandry Orozco further opportunity to shine.
